Do you have a family emergency plan?

When my kids were 6 and 8 I had spoken to a friend about a family emergency plan. She didn’t have one, so she was asking all sorts of questions. I was happy to tell her about our plan, and I talked to my kids about it each year, in the new year. My friend was SO IMPRESSED… that is… until I went to show her. I asked my son, “Hey, if there were an emergency and we all had to get out of the house, what is our rally point?” HE HAD NO IDEA. I had talked to my kids about it every year for 4 years, and he had NO IDEA.

So we did a mock drill as soon as my friend left the house. We still go over this every year. They are annoyed at this point, but the faster they go through it, the faster they are back to their own lives. I get to say I do it because of my work; you may need a different reason. A family emergency plan isn’t just about discussing it—practice makes it effective!

Either way, good luck with your family emergency plan!
