Women in Construction Week

So, it’s women in construction week. I’ve been in the industry since 1999.

I work with people who were born in 1999, so I guess that makes me a “seasoned veteran”

I grew up with brothers, my neighbors and cousins close in age were all boys so I was a frog catching, tree climbing Tom Boy. I was comfortable being the only girl around. By 1999 I was no longer a girl, but I was still very comfortable being the only woman in a room full of men.

So, this week, if anyone is interested, I will share a few insights in case they serve others. This is not a message to WOMEN because maybe some of you guys out here need to hear the same thing.

Let’s start with the biggest one- Advocate for yourself. Let’s say you want to be general superintendent on a project one day. When you start out you are just in a low level position. TALK to the general supers and ask about their path. They have stepping stones that got them there. Find out which ones you can use to build your own path. They don’t have to be the same stepping stones, so talk with lots of people and pick the stones to best pave your own path.

Advice from Heinz Sauger, reinterpreted through my experience.
